What will happen to Degas’ girl

In the moments after master has gone?

At the spark of day?

Will she flee?

Or will she, stoic and obedient,

Endure,

Until he comes again in soft light?

His maggots eat her from the inside,

At his mercy,

While he forgets he, too

Is at the mercy of Degas’ brush.
